New Shade House
| 15th October 2002
| April 2003 will see the opening of the new Shade House where a large selection of rare and unusual Woodland Garden and shade loving plants will be available. Visitors to the nursery will be able to walk around the newly planted old woodland garden and see many of these plants growing in their natural habitats. The large pond in the centre of the wood should also be finished, so summer visitors will have the benefit of seeing water and bog garden plants. The new showroom will be open where the full range of wild bird boxes, ladybird hibernation boxes, hedgehog boxes, bird tables, and a range of foods will be available. Also copper sculpture, dried flowers, stone troughs, stone toadstools, and many unusual gifts for the gardener. |

Hebridean Sheep
| 12th October 2002
| November will see the arrival of a nucleus flock of Hebridean sheep, which will be used for a conservation grazing project to run alongside a proposed wildflower meadow, and turf labyrinth, adjoining the newly planted Woodland Garden. First arrivals will be six ewe lambs followed by a ram next October, purchased from the Windy Hall flock owned by David Kinsman of Windermere. Hebridean Sheep are a primitive breed which comes under the Rare Breeds Survival Trust. In 1970 there were only about 600 left in this country, but now it is thought that there are over 3000. This increase is due mainly to their growing popularity as a parkland sheep at places like Tatton Park and Harewood House and their use by the National Trust for grazing sensitive areas, where other means would upset the ecological balance. |
